School Counselor's Vision Statement All students are entitled to receive the benefits of a school counseling and guidance program that is developmental in nature, preventive in design, and comprehensive in scope. As an integral part of the total educational program, credentialed school counselors ensure equity and access to services so that every student is challenged and supported to achieve his/her highest potential. Foundation MVUSD adopted the American School Counselor Association's National Standards in 1998. The standards address three domain areas: - Academic Development
- Career Development
- Personal/Social Development
The standards serve as the framework for the development as measurable student competencies based upon the local needs and concerns of each site. Delivery Professional school counselors provide educational support through the following delivery systems: - Guidance curriculum delivered in the classroom or group sessions
- Individual and group student planning, advisement and guidance
- Responsive services such as personal counseling, conflict resolution and peer mediation, crisis intervention, collaboration with parents, teachers and administration and referral to outside resources
Management School counselors use data to drive decisions, develop yearly action plans to reflect student needs and monitor student progress. Accountability School counselors measure the results of their program on a yearly basis and use this data to make decisions regarding program improvement. Guidance Curriculum The following school counseling curriculum is offered at Vista del Lago High School: Grades 9-12 During the high school years students begin to discover themselves, their varied talents and begin to make plans for their future. Guidance Assistants At middle and high school levels, the guidance assistant supports the counselors with program implementation. They schedule appointments, prepare college and career reference materials for parents and students and assist in the preparation of guidance resources. Choosing a Path to the Future Path 1: College Prep– for students wishing to earn a high school diploma and then enter directly into a 4 yr. college or University. Path 2: Middle College– for students wishing to earn a high school diploma and get a head start on a AA degree through Riverside Community College. Path 3: Pathway Choices– for students wishing to earn a high school diploma and earn a certificate in a specialized field. Path 4: High School Diploma– for students who just want to complete requirements for graduation.
